First day of school jitters

 o What happened?

This week during lab we prepared a first day of school lesson plan and had the choice to present different parts of it. I chose to teach the introduction between teacher and students since I think it’s an important way to start off the year by getting to know each other well. Something I struggled with today while teaching this lesson was nerves, im not sure why but I felt myself talking fast and stumbling over words even though I was prepared. This is something that I know I will overcome once I get use to being in the teacher role and have more experience it was just an odd start to the day of teaching. But I made it though and over all I am happy with how I taught and this is something that I would use. in my future classroom.

o How does it relate to what I know about teaching and learning?

I think that this lesson went well but I know there are a lot of things that I would do different looking back at it now. Looking back and improving our lessons or teaching style for a specific part of the lesson is something that I know teachers do. this is something that I will have to learn how to do better once I gain more experience. I also was reminded the in our teaching labs we are sometimes graced with having good students because it’s our classmates who will eventually be up there teaching as well. But today I had a rather chatty student in my class that I had to remind that we were moving on to the next topic. This was actually helpful during the lab because it reminded me that I know students are not going to be perfect and I will have to remind them so stop talking or pay attention.

o What did I learn from the experience?

I learned that no matter how much you plan for a lesson and prepared you think you are that you’re going to end up changing things. Not everything always goes to plan or works as well as you think it will, which is ok because those are things you can learn from. So now after teaching this lesson I can go back and change up some things to try and make it more successful the next time I teach it.

o How can I apply this as an Agriscience teacher?

As a teacher some things that I can apply in my classroom is making sure that I have good classroom management. This way I don’t have to constantly remind my students to pay attention or stop talking that it’s something they expect to do once I start talking. Also, I need to be prepared to go back and reflect on my lessons so that each time I teach them they are getting better and I know what works and what doesn’t.

  1. Michaela. Firstly, I love that Thomas brings a real life experience into the classroom and that you emphasize this fact with memes. Great job exercising your "I'm in charge" muscle in lab. Secondly, I love that you point out that we should constantly be reflecting on our lessons and looking at how we can improve them. Sometimes I go into planning a lesson with the mindset that it's going to work perfectly, but that's not reality. Improvise, adapt, and overcome for better student learning!
