Life knowledge teaching

On Monday I visited my CT at dover area high school and taught a lesson on leadership styles and what they are. Each student was able to figure out their personal leadership style and the attributes that come with it as well as the strength and weaknesses attached to the style. Students made a “dating profile” for each of the styles that included 3 strengths or good thing about it, 3 weaknesses or “bad” things about it, and a pick-up line that style would use.

While teaching I tried to have the students get up and move a lot and have them working on different things about every 10-15 minutes. This helped by keeping their attention by changing the state of the learner so that they never got a chance to be bored. Also, I choose this lesson because it seemed like it applied to the students’ lives, and it did. They got into it because they were learning about themselves and pointing out “oh ya I guess I do that, or no that’s not me”. This reminded me to have my content stay relevant to the students’ lives and how it can apply to them outside of the classroom.

One thing that I learned from this experience was to be flexible, I taught I was going to get through more than I did and ended up running out of time. Thankfully I realized that I was about to run short on time, and I adjusted one of my activities that would give me some time for what was more important in the lesson. This was also just a good experience to get a real feel of what a 90-minute class is like and how much time I actually have to teach because it’s not a full 90 minutes like I thought it’s more like 75-80minutes.

Overall, this was a great experience I got to meet more of my students that I will have in the spring. I started to create some connections with my students and find out their interests and what they want to learn and do. It was also a great reminder that the planning is stressful but it’s worth it because then the lesson usually goes well
