Woah were half way there
What a great week to hit half way through student teaching finishing it off with national FFA week. This week was filled with a ton of activities and fun but also a very exhausting week with late nights at FFA events.
This week started off with a recruitment event at the middle school which meant that My CT was down there while I covered all the classes. Large animal science is the classes that I haven’t picked up yet that will come in the next couple of weeks. But we were learning about ear notching in swine, and man I thought that I messed it up. Thank God I didn’t but I was doubting myself about the litter ear notching and thought that I gave them the wrong information when Ms. March returned. Animal science is the subject that is my middle ground content knowledge wise, while I still need to learn myself, I need to be confident in what I do know.
Tuesday, I learned something new about FFA week and why we do certain traditions. I always wondered why as a part of FFA we would always eat at Hoss’s at different conferences or as a chapter, I just thought that it was easy because of the buffet and large dinning rooms. But it's actually because the owners of Hoss’s are huge supporters of the FFA so during FFA week it's a tradition on T
uesday to eat at Hoss’s.
Wednesday, I got a taste of what it's like to be a chair of a CDE event. Ms. Marsh is the chair of the floriculture CDE event for the AFY midwinter contest. I got to help her set up for the event in all 3 rooms the exam, identification and floral design room. Then I was able to run the identification room as FFA members came through. After seeing this I definitely have a better idea of what it's like to be a chair of a CDE event and it's a huge responsibility that takes time to put together.
Friday was a crazy day on top of a 2-hour delay through off our schedule for putting on the FFA teacher lunch. FFA members prepared a meal for all the teachers during their lunch and all the members introduced themselves and held a raffle for floral designs. Since we lost a block to be able to set up the room and decorate and get all of the food set out it was an all-hands-on deck day with setting up and making sure that it ran well. All the Ag teachers were able to work together along with students to pull it off, team work! It was great to see how many teachers came through and thanked the students for holding this lunch, and a lot of them were wearing the Dover FFA sweatshirts. This is something that I would love to bring into my own program because a lot of teachers help out with being judges for different events or donating to fundraisers and it's a great way to say thank you to them.
Michaela,
ReplyDeleteIt looks like a great change of pace (probably faster than most), but I am glad you had the full experience of helping with National FFA Week from a teacher's perspective. It is very important to make sure that the week is highlighting the program (recruitment), celebration of students, but also a chance to give back to those who support FFA! Great job, Dover!
