This is Faith's greenhouse! SAE visit

Faith is a junior at dover area high school, she is very involved with in the Ag department. Upon taking all the Ag classes she can, she is also the FFA treasure on the officer team. She is currently taking an independent study that involves her SAE project of being a greenhouse manager, and she does a great job of taking care of everything.

I work with faith almost every day helping to oversee her independent study as well as helping her with any greenhouse work when she needs it. So, I visit her SAE project all the time, but I did interview her on March 25th to get some more specific details about her goals of her SAE project.

Her SAE project includes taking care of the greenhouse while also starting a vegetable program. Her goal is to grow enough veggies and allow teachers at dover to come to the greenhouse and get fresh produce. So far, she has a variety of herbs, tomatoes, broccoli, Brussel sprots, and peppers growing. She has been able to harvest a lot of the herbs and tomatoes so far, and she is finally seeing some peppers start to grow and broccoli.

Recently she made QR codes that contain recipes that can be made using the produce that teachers can pick up during the school day. I believe that this is a great way to help market the produce and show people that you can make a lot more with the produce rather than just throwing it in a salad or sandwich. These QR codes are located on the fridge door where teachers would pick up the produce that has been harvested.

For her SAE project she also has a large role in helping with the plant sale that the chapter puts on. She regularly plants flowers to be sold during the sale. Also she set up planting stations for our plant science class so that they could be involved in the sale as well.

She records everything that she does in the AET system. This includes making journal entries of everything that she does in the greenhouse, recording any money transactions needed for her project, and recording her hours that she spending on the project. Not only is her SAE used as a class grade for her independent study but she also has regular SAE checks that are graded.

I believe that faith is off to a great start on her SAE project and has an amazing work ethic in the greenhouse. Eventually I would love to see her create a community garden that community members would come plant and harvest produce to be used in their homes.

  1. It is always great to see student involvement in SAE! This looks like an amazing project and it will be great to see what further learning/work/career experiences come about because of it!
