Tommy; jack of all trades SAE

Tommy is a junior at Dover Area High school in our Ag program His SAE project is on his job at Whitecomb’s Farm Market. You maybe thinking that this is just a typical SAE job placement that student will do on their high school jobs. But Tommy’s job is pretty cool and he get to experience a lot of agriculture while working.

Tommy does about 5 different jobs while being at whitecomb's. The first job that he does is working in the produce stand. Whitcomb does grow their own produce on their farm lands but they also ship some time from different suppliers. The second job is working in the deli, making sandwiches and selling food to customers. The third job is working in the bakery helping to create some pretty tasty baked good (they were so hard to resist). The fourth job is handling the mulch that whitecomb sells, apparently this is his favorite part of the job so far because he gets to load up mulch onto the trucks. The fifth job is working in the 8 greenhouses that whitecomb grows flowers in to sell. All day he’s running back and forth between these jobs which is impressive he gets to experience so much.

Tommy also serves customers by helping them at the window and checking them out. Also, he helps them find any product they would want (this place really has it all). I got to see tommy interact with his coworkers and some customers and he is always ready to help and polite.

When learning about Whitecombs Tommy told me that they have several acres that they farm to get some of their produce. This is the one way that tommy wants to expand his SAE project is by working on their farm. He has a plan to start working at it during the summer months and is excited to be incorporated into another aspect of the business.

  1. It is great to see the good things students do through their SAE programs. These experiences will serve the student well no matter the future career path.
