Trying new labs!

This week in my animal science class we tried something new... well I did teaching, and the students. We dissected a pregnant pig uterus! I love dissection so this was really fun for me but I have never taught a dissection before either. I watched a quick video in the morning of a uterus dissection to make sure that I was able to identify all the different reproductive parts, because sometimes they look a bit different when preserved especially the ovary and follicles. Basically, I was able to have the students walk me through the order of the reproductive system then show me on the tract which part was which. While I dissected, they told me the function of each part too. My favorite part was letting the students dissect out their own fetal pig within the uterus. Some of them were super into it and ready to step in to dissect others were basically out the door and green. After they got the fetal pig out, they were then able to dissect their pig. I had them identify any parts they could find; this was mainly the digestive tract. They had a blast doing this and were able to get some cool pictures of the different organs and even preserve some of them in jars. This by far is one of my favorite hands-on lab in animal science besides the estrous cycle party!

Some tiny fetal pigs!

Another thing this week that I got to experience was FFA chapter officer interviews. We had 10 different candidates and man they are all awesome and it's going to be hard to pick out team. I was able to sit in on the interviews and ask some questions to them and listen to all their answers.  It was awesome to be on the opposite side of this, because last time I was the one in the chair getting asked questions. I can’t wait to see which candidates earn an officer position!
